Postcards from Vacation

Notes from... 07.07.2008

So last week I was actually on vacation. An unplanned vacation, but a vacation nonetheless.

Two more of our friends have left Chicago, and we offered to help them move. To California. We were surprised when they took us up on the offer, but they decided a couple of Pollacks would be useful to have in case of emergency (and to drive their car while they drove the moving van, and to help load and unload).

Driving cross-country has been “on my list,” so I was really excited about the trip. We traveled the major interstates that followed old Rt. 66 and went through Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and finally to Pasadena, where they’ll be living. In my goal of visiting all fifty states in the country, I crossed off two more, leaving me with twenty to go (a “visit” must include an overnight stay. I’ve driven through a couple other states, or have crossed over state lines in some cases, but I don’t count those as having been there). So, all in all, a great opportunity.

Over this week I’ll be sharing “postcards” from this trip. In the meantime, do you have any vacations planned for the summer? Or has the economy curtailed your travel?

  in august, we will be taking a trip to somewhere in tennessee, which is just a stop along the way to atlanta, where we will see two cubs games, the coca cola museum, and then drive home. not looking forward to all of the car time, but it’s still cheaper (and less potentially embarrassing) than flying us and two energetic preschoolers. You’re welcome, air travelers.

  We unfortunately have two close-together air travel adventures upcoming. The trips will be great, the flying not so much. The last weekend in July, made into a looong weekend, is our annual trip to Portland OR for the Oregon Brewers Festival and a visit with our family who lives there (in Portland, not at the Fest), as well as the obligatory trips to Powell’s to buy mass quantities of books. The second weekend in August is a trip to San Francisco and Arcata CA for a friend’s wedding. We’ve never been to SF before, so it should be interesting, but the 5 hour drive north to Arcata/Eureka is not as appealing. A wedding in the unofficial Pot Capital of America may prove interesting, however, especially for those of us who choose not to partake…

  I do have to say that on our flight back we had a good number of kids, including an unaccompanied minor. Yes, a couple of babies screamed, but overall, the kids were great. One preschool girl started having fits when boarding, but the gate agents and flight attendants were really good at diffusing the crying and nipping the situation in the bud. I was really impressed with them.
